This chapter first defines the critical concepts and processing of binaural cues and then provides summaries of the messages in each of the chapters. The anatomical and physiological substrates of binaural processing are fairly obvious, notably in the superior olivary complex as auditory processes advance to higher centers in the auditory pathway, there is continued evidence for the occurrence of spatial tuning. The area of binaural hearing encompasses studies of auditory perception, physiology, and modeling, including normal and abnormal aspects of the auditory system. Binaural hearing is used to localize sound sources in space and understand speech in the presence of interfering sounds. Binaural hearing is of critical importance to humans and animals for communication and safety in everyday listening situations.
